What is Stories in Color?

Stories in Color is a student-led literary
initiative dedicated to the careful selection of books and educational resources highlighting the voices of historically marginalized communities and writers.
Founded by Claire Kim, the primary objective is to create a space where the sense of representation can be nurtured in young students alongside meaningful connections to diverse lived experiences. Through read-alouds and discussion, Stories in Color encourages empathy and
an enrichment of perspectives from themes often underrepresented in
literature.

The  Harlem Renaissance was a major cultural
and artistic movement during the 1920s and
early 1930s centered in Harlem, New York.
It celebrated African American identity, creativity,
and intellectual life through literature, music, art,
and performance.

“I do not belong to the sobbing school of Negrohood who hold that nature somehow has given them a lowdown dirty deal and whose feelings are all hurt about it” (Zora Neale Hurston, Dust Tracks On A Road)

“We younger Negro artists who create now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame.” (Langston Hughes, The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain)

Harlem: A Forum of Negro Life

Harlem: A Forum of Negro Life played an important role in showcasing Black literature and intellectual thought. Edited by Wallace Thurman, it included critical essays on art, plays, and theater reviews.

Authors' Voices

In this section, I share reflections on books by Black and Hispanic authors that have resonated with me long after I finished reading them. Through discussion and interactive activities for young students, I explore the ideas and experiences that made each story memorable to an audience, where inspiration can be further fostered!

Claire Kim is a seventeen-year-old writer who first became interested in Black culture through her research for the National History Day competition. She found the 1920s zine counterculture movement championed by Wallace Thurman and Langston Hughes to be fascinating. Getting to discover self-published works from a generation of radical young artists inspired her to find other literature and writing from historically marginalized communities. Through Stories of Color, she hopes to provide a platform where both renowned and contemporary authors from underrepresented communities can be explored by younger children through a meaningful lens.
